Set in the artistic period during the end of the 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily inspired by French history. The play can be found in and is centered around the happenings of true-to-life nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, titled the Moulin Rouge, where the patrons come for unadulterated fun. By the turn of the 20th century, Moulin Rouge became famous for its French Cabaret style – lively, loose, and pure party entertainment. This Parisian venue that the staging was created from also influenced the production's preparation, with Baz Luhrmann and the Broadway play's creative team mentioning that they did directly borrow from the actual French time period, and it can decisively be viewed in the show. The set design, costume design, classical renditions, and actual performances (which sees a lot of can-can dance) all clearly show reverence and respect to the original Moulin Rouge.

It is in this time of history leading up to the 1900s and right in the middle of the French La Belle Époque, a period thought to be the pinnacle of beauty and spreading artistry, where the forbidden tale of two lovers finally happens. Christian, an American writer who journeys to Paris seeking a successful calling, meets Satine, the premier entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. The couple, despite many oncoming trials and tribulations, fall deeply in love and have to be a secret relationship with each other caused by their lack of standing and power.

Contrary to other accounts, the duration of La Belle Époque was criticized by many not as a time period of cultural and artistic development. Some people are of the opinion that this time period were all about overindulgence and abuse of the rich. the Broadway play, however, chose to present the era in a more endearing perspective by instead presenting the good Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as witnessed through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the play.

In more recent years, locals and tourists have the chance to be part of the show most likely also reveled in by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be produced at an equally lively and breathtaking venue, Thelma Gaylord PAT At Civic Center Music Hall .
