Set in the Bohemian period during the end of the 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily taken from French history. The play takes places and is centered around the dealings of a real nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, named the Moulin Rouge, where the patrons come for unadulterated fun. By the late 1900s, the nightclub became renowned for its French Cabaret cultural aspect – vibrant, full of spirit, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian entertainment venue that the staging was created from also affected the production, with Baz Luhrmann and the show's creators stating that they did take pieces of the actual French history, and it can undoubtedly be viewed in the performance. The decor, clothing, musical arrangements, and choreography (which showcases a lot of can-can dance) all clearly show reverence and respect to the 2001 adaptation of Moulin Rouge.

It is in this period of history leading up to the 1900s and during the peak of France's La Belle Époque, a period considered to be the height of lasting peace and harmony, where the romantic story of two lovers finally happens. Christian, an American writer who travels to France searching for a successful calling, meets Satine, the best performer of the Moulin Rouge. Christian and Satine, despite many oncoming trials and tribulations, fall crazily in love and settle for a hidden relationship with each other due to the Duke of Monroth's intervention.

Depending on perspective, the period of La Belle Époque was denounced by many not as a time period of cultural and artistic development. Some people believe that these years were all about overindulgence and abuse of the rich. the Broadway musical, however, chose to capture the era in a more favorable viewpoint by highlighting the good Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as witnessed through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the musical.

This September, locals and tourists have the opportunity to relive the entertainment most likely also enjoyed by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be performing at an equally lively and second to none venue, Thelma Gaylord PAT At Civic Center Music Hall . With interior decor just as beautiful as the set design that it is staging, Thelma Gaylord PAT At Civic Center Music Hall is the ideal fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited showing on Saturday 7th September 2024.
