History
The 1904 original production that inspired the musical rendition plunged into tricky concepts of adult responsibilities versus childhood dreams. The musical plays out with similar elements while bringing a fresh enchantment and modern flair compared to the debut in 1954, which still claimed a Tony Award the following year.
Iconic actress Mary Martin’s leading performance lends to the musicals widespread success. Her gender-bending role as Peter Pan was a cornerstone of progress at the time. The show continued snatching Tonys and a Drama Desk award from 1980 through 1999. The 1960 film recording would also enshrine the story and bring the musical to TVs at home.
