When compared to the original known story of the Shakespearean play which was presented live on stage around forty decades prior, fans have noted the considerable alterations that had been made to ‘& Juliet’, a significantly newer musical based on the same leading lady. Shakespeare’s original story centers around the tragic tale that transpires because of rash decision-making and the blind passion of two lovers, which results in the deaths of both Romeo and Juliet. On the other hand, ‘& Juliet’ looks beyond the said tragic events and instead pursues a more positive outlook by focusing on the endless possibilities of life, even after such agonizing experiences.
This messaging is evident in the new musicall’s cast of characters, Juliet, and her gang of friends, who travel to Paris to find their identities not just as individuals, but as mighty women. ‘& Juliet’ is a good feminist interpretation through the eyes of Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who takes command of her husband’s tale and changes the ending of his beloved classic. She gives both old characters from the original story a rare moment to shine, while recruiting new and equally empowered women to the story. Going off-script from Romeo & Juliet, the play is able to incorporate pop culture, specifically songs from recent decades, that depict the growing awareness and self-discovery of each of the ladies throughout the show. Even the costumes worn by the production’s women give a nod to Romeo & Juliet, while presenting the contrast between the ongoing show and the previous classic by pairing Elizabethan dresses and iconography with today’s costume styles. Each aspect of the musical was carefully thought-out to promote empowerment and "being able to write your own story".
