Set in the Bohemian period during the end of the 19th century, Moulin Rouge! The Musical was heavily based on French history. The show takes places and is centered around the happenings of a real nightclub in Montmartre, Paris, named the Moulin Rouge, where the can-can dance was born. By the late 19th century, the Moulin Rouge nightclub became renowned for its French Cabaret elegance – ecstatic, full of spirit, and a somewhat crazy lifestyle. This Parisian venue that the staging was based on also influenced the production, with Baz Luhrmann and the musical's creative team mentioning that they did take pieces of the actual Bohemian history, and it can decisively be viewed in the show. The set design, costumes, musical arrangements, and song and dance numbers (which features a lot of can-can dance) all evidently are a clear inspiration from to the film version of Moulin Rouge.

It is in this time of history leading up to the 1900s and smack in the middle of France's La Belle Époque, a duration considered to be the height of lasting peace and harmony, where the forbidden affair of two lovers finally happens. Christian, an American writer who journeys to Paris seeking a successful passion, meets Satine, the top entertainer of the Moulin Rouge. The pair, despite many oncoming trials and tribulations, fall deeply in love and are forced into a hidden affair with each other caused by their uncontrollable feelings.

Ironically, the duration of La Belle Époque was criticized by even locals not as a period of peace and harmony. Some people are convinced that this decade were all about overindulgence and abuse of the rich. Moulin Rouge! The Musical, however, chose to showcase the era in a more positive light by highlighting the good Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love, as seen through Christian and Satine’s evolving love story throughout the show.

In this decade, theatre fans have the opportunity to enjoy the entertainment most likely also loved by the original patrons of the Moulin Rouge, as Moulin Rouge! The Musical will be showing at an equally lively and awesome venue, Thelma Gaylord PAT At Civic Center Music Hall . With interior decor just as dazzling as the set design that it is staging, Thelma Gaylord PAT At Civic Center Music Hall is the perfect fit for Moulin Rouge’s limited showing on Tuesday 10th September 2024.
